Cybereason’s DEEP 2018 Unites Hundreds of Attendees to Change the Cybersecurity Mindset

Cybereason, creators of the leading cybersecurity AI Hunting Platform, held a supremely successful DEEP 2018 last week in Boston. Hundreds of attendees packed into a conference center in Boston and were treated to short, thoughtful talks that asked provocative and smart questions and engaged the audience.

Headlining the event was New York Times bestselling author Michael Lewis, whose books include Moneyball, The Big Short, The Blind Side and The Undoing Project. Christopher Lydon, host of WBUR’s “Open Source” interviewed Lewis during the keynote address and their discussion focused on the future of U.S. business, economics and entrepreneurship.

In its second year, DEEP’s focus is about shifting the traditional security mindset to think about global security problems in a different way. According to one 2018 DEEP attendee, “This conference is great. It has style and quality with thought-provoking sessions that engage everyone and don’t bore you. Cybereason has most definitely created a unique event.”

DEEP 2018 highlights included:

  • Garry Kasparov, former World Chess Champion, discussed how “Chess may hold the key to unlocking the secrets of human cognition,” the potential of artificial intelligence and how instead of fighting machines, we have to bring them together.
  • Rachel Tobac, two-time winner of the DEFCON Social Engineering Challenge, focused on how humans are your first line of defense. She said “everyone in the company, particularly client-facing staff, needs to be ‘politely paranoid.’”
  • Oz Pearlman, internationally-acclaimed mentalist, speaker, magician, wowed the audience with his version of next-level social engineering.
  • Ed Davis, Former Boston Police Commissioner, shared his first-hand and personal experience of the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing tying in the fundamentals of crisis management. He pointed out that you cannot establish a relationship during a crisis -- both in law enforcement and in security, you need to build relationships and a plan beforehand.
  • Emmet Cohen, American Jazz pianist and composer, drew a parallel between his music and security. “Jazz is an unplanned, unpredictable world, like cybersecurity, There’s not always time for problem solving, and improvisation is key.”
  • John Halamka, CIO, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, shared the realities of healthcare security and the challenges ahead; he concluded that “security is a process, not a project.”
