We are overly fond in security of talking about the tools and technologies of the trade. To be sure, those of us who have excelled have done so by being experts in the field of security and by being deep in the bits-and-bytes. Our culture is a competence culture, which is to say that it is about subject matter expertise.
Much as pecking order in some fighting units is determined by being “tough enough” and tested or indoctrinated, the respect in our security subculture often goes to the one with the best technical chops or the one who can demonstrate the finest technical mind. Unfortunately, this isn’t a culture that can continue and mature without growing and accepting other disciplines, other values and fostering new talents.
